In this particular auction, you will be bidding on a collectible piece of hotelware. From the Republican House located in Milwaukee, this is a piece of Restaurant Ware as made by Albert Pick & Co., located in Chicago. Marked as shown on the reverse, this used piece has a diameter of nearly 8.75 inches. From a New England estate, it is free of chips, cracks, breaks, and repairs, but does have surface wear consistent with age and prior use.

Here is some information on this grand establishment:

The Republican House, located on the northwest corner of 3rd St. and Kilbourn Ave., once was considered Milwaukee's finest hotel.  It was a marvel of luxury.  Designed by F. Velguth of Milwaukee, who was retained through successive remodelings, it had ornate towers and balconies and loads of exterior ornamentation.  The Republican House goes back to the 1830s, when the city's first real hotel, the Washington House, was built by Archibald Clybourn at what is now N. 3rd and Vliet Sts.  The hotel was renamed in 1854 for the newly formed Republican Party.  Two years later it was moved to the corner of 3rd and Kilbourn, where in 1884 a new structure was erected by owner Charles F. Kletzsch.  The hotel was the scene of numerous political rallies.  In 1958 the hotel closed, and in 1961 it was razed to make room for expansion by The Journal Company.
