    FAQs

What does a MAF Sensor do?
A mass (air) flow sensor (MAF) is a sensor used to determine the mass flow rate of air entering a fuel-injected internal combustion engine.

    Where are these sensors located?
The Mass Air Flow sensor is located in the intake ducting after the air filter.

What are the possible failures of MAF sensors?
MAF sensor contamination or damage is usually caused by an air filter that is in poor condition or incorrectly installed. A damaged or contaminated MAF sensor can still function, but the changes to its characteristics can cause a wide variety of driving problems.

When To Replace the Mass Airflow Sensor?

    1. Check engine light
    2. Lean or Rich Fuel Mixture
    3. Difficulty Starting Your Car
    4. Engine Stalls After Starting or When Idling
    5. Engine Hesitation and Dragging Sensation
    6. Engine Hesitation and Jerking
    7. Engine Hiccups

How can you prevent and solve MAF sensor failures?
A problem with the MAF sensor can cause the engine warning light to turn on. This fault is stored as a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the engine ECU and can be inspected by a DTC scan tool. However, if the root cause of failure is a clogged MAF sensor passage, the engine will usually start, will run poorly or stall, and may not set a DTC. If the MAF sensor is defective, it will need to be replaced. This is a simple process. If the MAF sensor is contaminated, cleaning it may provide a temporary solution, but this may damage the sensor’s delicate hardware. If the MAF sensor is replaced, make sure the air filter is also installed properly.

How can I get the MAF sensor to last longer?
Well, there’s a simple solution – clean the air filter regularly! When you keep the filter clean, you ensure that the sensor isn’t bogged down by debris and dust particles that could clog it up over time. In addition, it’s good practice to take out the entire sensor occasionally and clean it as well.

How to Install a MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR(MAF):
    1. Position MAF sensor in the vehicle. Make sure the airflow direction indicated on the sensor is toward the engine.
    2. Install sensor to air duct seal(s), if so equipped, on the replacement MAF sensor.
    3. Connect the MAF sensor to the throttle body air cleaner ducts. If the sensor mounts directly on the throttle body, install and tighten the mounting screws to 10 ft-lb. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!
    4. Position clamps over the air duct/MAF sensor connections and tighten. Replace the clamps if necessary. (NOTE: For the MAF sensor to work properly, the sensor/air duct connections must be airtight.)
    5. CAREFULLY plug the harness connector lead into the MAF sensor.
