In pursuit of the best sound, it is carved from a single piece of wood and hand-dug by skilled craftsmen, without being combined.

Heavy and strong Malaysian mersawa wood is used for the deep sound.

Now called "temple blocks," they are often incorporated into drum sets and used as percussion in brass bands and orchestras.
