Ho Chi Minh Order

This is a ceremonial award flag issued by the State Council of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The text across the top reads "HỘI ĐỒNG NHÀ NƯỚC VIỆT NAM – BAN KHEN THƯỞNG," which translates to “State Council of Vietnam – Commendation Committee.”

At the center is an embroidered depiction of the Hồ Chí Minh Order medal, one of the highest awards bestowed by the Vietnamese state. The medal features the profile of Hồ Chí Minh with the inscription "HUÂN CHƯƠNG HỒ CHÍ MINH" (Hồ Chí Minh Order).

Below the medal image, the inscription reads: “TẶNG THƯỞNG HUÂN CHƯƠNG HỒ CHÍ MINH – ĐƠN VỊ ANH HÙNG CHỐNG MỸ – GIO LINH – QUẢNG TRỊ.”

This translates to: “Awarded the Hồ Chí Minh Order – Heroic Unit Against America – Gio Linh – Quảng Trị.”

This flag was awarded to the military or civil collective in Gio Linh, a key northern district of Quảng Trị Province, which was a heavily contested frontline during the Vietnam War.

Gio Linh was the site of extensive bombardment and major battles, including during the Tet Offensive and Operation Hastings. The commendation identifies the unit as a Heroic Collective in the struggle against American forces, recognizing valor and sacrifice in combat.

It was intended for ceremonial display within the honored unit's premises or during official military commemorations. The flag is both a symbolic and physical marker of one of the highest forms of patriotic recognition in Vietnam.

The medal depicted on the flag is the Huân chương Hồ Chí Minh (Hồ Chí Minh Order), one of the highest state decorations of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It was first established on June 6, 1947, by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, named in honor of President Hồ Chí Minh. The order was created to recognize exceptional service to the revolutionary cause, either in military or civil capacities.

It is awarded to both individuals and collectives—such as military units, state organizations, or localities—for outstanding achievements in combat, leadership, science, economics, or culture that significantly contribute to the Vietnamese state or to socialism. For military units, it typically signifies heroic service in wartime, especially in resistance against foreign forces.

The medal features a profile portrait of Hồ Chí Minh and is typically suspended from a red and yellow striped ribbon, symbolizing national colors. It ranks just below the Gold Star Order (Vietnam’s highest decoration).

When awarded to frontline combat units from key battlegrounds like Quảng Trị—it holds significant historical and collectible importance.
