The Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded in 1348 by King Edward III of England, is the oldest and most prestigious order of chivalry in the United Kingdom. Description

This early version of the Breast Star of the Most Noble Order of the Garter reflects the classic design used from the 17th century onwards. Worn by Knights Companions during formal state occasions, the star was introduced as part of the evolving regalia of the under the reign of Charles II, at a time when European orders of chivalry were adopting more elaborate insignia.

Measuring approximately 10.5cm by 10cm, the star features a finely crafted eight-pointed silver star with sharply faceted rays. At its golden centre lies a crimson enamel cross of St George, the patron saint of England. This is encircled by a deep blue enamel garter inscribed with the motto: “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (Shame on him who thinks evil of it); a phrase rooted in medieval ideals of honour and integrity – a cornerstone of the Order’s identity.

Unlike later variants, this early type does not feature a crown or additional embellishments above the garter, giving it a restrained and timeless look. On the reverse, a secure pin and clasp mechanism ensures the star remains firmly attached to a tunic or jacket.

Though the Order itself dates back to the mid-14th century, the introduction of the Breast Star in the 1600s marked a significant development in its visual identity. Today, this reproduction provides a proud link to centuries of tradition and will more than stand out in any collection or display.
