The 50th Tactical Fighter Wing was not deployed as a whole to the Vietnam War theater, but during the Vietnam era, it was part of U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) under NATO command.

From 1953 through the early 1990s, it was based in West Germany, first at Hahn Air Base and later at Bitburg and Ramstein.

During the Vietnam War years, its primary mission was forward-based deterrence against Warsaw Pact forces, operating fighter-bomber aircraft such as the F-100 Super Sabre and later the F-4 Phantom II and F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Although the wing itself was not deployed to Vietnam, personnel trained within or rotated from the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing were regularly transferred to Southeast Asia.

Aircraft types used by the wing were also heavily used in Vietnam. The lightning bolts in the emblem reflect its tactical fighter role with emphasis on electronic warfare and precision strike capability.

The 50th TFW was a key part of the USAF’s European defense posture while sharing, with other tactical fighter wings the combat burden in Southeast Asia.
