Introduction to the FlexWise™ Retainer Retention Wire

– Compatible with RELIANCE ORTHO FLEXTECH

Retention plays a critical role in orthodontic treatment by maintaining tooth alignment following active intervention. The FlexWise™ retention wire is a fixed lingual retainer composed of braided stainless steel, engineered to eliminate the need for manual bending or anatomical customization to fit the lingual surface. This feature significantly reduces chair time by removing the need for impressions and model fabrication.

Manufactured by J&J® Orthodontics (SKU: 437-201/2), the FlexWise™ retention wire is constructed from a specialized medical-grade stainless steel that is resistant to corrosion and fracture when applied correctly. The product is fully compatible with the Ortho FlexTech retainer from Reliance Orthodontics.

Comparison with Other Permanent Retainers

FlexWise™ is a spool-based braided retainer, functionally similar to Reliance’s Ortho FlexTech

Braided wire retainer comes in straight length braided wire in two optional sizes. (SKU 437-1028/1032)

3-3 permanent retainer has two meshed pads to the rest on the canines with multiple length options. (SKU 500-32-6)

Key Advantages of FlexWise™ Retention Wire

FlexWise™ represents the next generation of permanent retainers. While compatible with existing products like Ortho FlexTech, it offers distinct benefits that enhance both clinical utility and patient experience:

· Dual Flexibility Options: Available in Flexible and Ultra-Flexible varieties, allowing greater adaptability to diverse lingual anatomies.

· Enhanced Mechanical Properties: Superior tensile and impact strength promote durability and resistance to fracture.

· Polished Surface: The high-polish finish helps minimize plaque accumulation.

· User-Friendly Application: Facilitates efficient placement, reducing clinical chair time and improving patient comfort.

Clinical and Economic Benefits

· Effectively retains orthodontic outcomes and reduces rotational relapse risk.

· Offers improved patient comfort by lying flush with the bonded tooth surfaces.

· Demonstrates excellent torsional and tensile strength.

· Eliminates laboratory processing through direct intraoral bonding.

· MRI-compatible.

· Cost-effective: approximately 50% less expensive than Ortho FlexTech while providing an additional 10 inches in length.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

1.    Surface Preparation:

o   Clean and polish the enamel surface thoroughly. Etch the surface with an appropriate acid agent for 30 seconds. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

o   Apply a uniform layer of orthodontic primer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to air dry to ensure optimal adhesive bonding.

2.    Adhesive Application:

o   Apply a minimal, controlled quantity of adhesive to the lingual surface of each designated tooth, strictly following the adhesive manufacturer’s guidelines.

3.    Wire Placement:

o   Primary Technique: Embed the FlexWise™ wire directly into the uncured adhesive on the lingual tooth surfaces. Ensure precise positioning to maintain tooth alignment and eliminate any slack in the wire. Cure the adhesive sequentially to secure the wire.

o   Alternative Technique: Affix one terminal end of the wire to the lingual surface of a cuspid with adhesive. Light-cure to stabilize. Progressively position and cure the wire across the remaining teeth, maintaining tension and avoiding slack.

4.    Overcoat Application:

o   Apply an additional layer of adhesive over the bonded wire to ensure complete encapsulation. Cure each segment individually to secure placement.

5.    Post-Placement Assessment:

o   Evaluate occlusal clearance and correct any interferences. Polish bonded areas to eliminate sharp edges or irregularities that could compromise comfort or function.

NOTE: In cases of diastema closure involving maxillary arches, supplemental stabilization (e.g., secondary wire installation) is advised to reduce the risk of space relapse resulting from potential wire elongation.

Clinical Tips

· Select the appropriate flexibility level based on case requirements. A primer may be applied to reduce flexibility if needed.

· Bird beak pliers may be used for minor adjustments for atypical tooth shapes.

· For irregular lingual surfaces where bending is undesirable, avoid placing composite initially. Bond the retainer to adjacent teeth first, then position and secure the wire on the irregular tooth with a fine explorer before curing.

· FlexWise™ may also serve as a splint for stabilizing traumatized or periodontally compromised teeth.
