Product Introduction:
A fuel injector is a device for atomizing and injecting fuel into an internal combustion engine. The injector atomizes the fuel and forces it directly into the combustion chamber at the precise point in the combustion cycle.
What Are the Signs of a Bad Fuel Injector?
Less Engine Power. With at least one cylinder starved of fuel by a bad injector, your engine will rapidly lose power.
Misfiring Engine.
Rough Idling.
Stalling Engine.
Thickening Exhaust.
Dancing RPM Needle.
Check Engine Light.
3 Common Fuel Injection System Problems
Clogged Fuel Injectors.
A fuel injector can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms it causes can be similar to a bad spark plug or ignition coil, that is, one of the cylinders is not firing. If it is related to a clogged fuel injector, it is most likely because old fuel has flowed through the engine, causing residue to get stuck inside the injector or its basket. If the fuel injector is completely clogged, it will most likely have to be removed from the vehicle and professionally cleaned, as additives and fuel rail inducing jet cleaners will not clear the clog because they simply cannot pass through.
Dirty fuel injectors.
If fuel is still able to pass through the injectors, but not in the proper amount, they are generally considered dirty. Dirty fuel injectors affect the flow rate of the fuel, which can cause poor idling, misfiring, difficult starting, or spraying, which reduces the car's ability to accelerate effectively. While some tank additive injector cleaners may help reduce deposits in the injectors, the only real way to clean them and restore optimal performance is to remove them and use the proper chemicals and equipment.
Leaking fuel injectors.
If the fuel injectors are leaking externally, the vehicle should not be driven. While leaking injectors can cause similar problems as dirty injectors, you can usually smell gasoline under the hood and even spot the leak, depending on your make and model. Externally leaking injectors present a fire risk and will need to be completely replaced.
How to stop injectors from leaking?
Step 1 -With the car idling, lift the hood of the car and inspect the fuel injector rail. A strong gasoline smell is a good indicator of a fuel leak. However, look carefully at the top and bottom of the fuel rail. CAUTION: The fuel injection system is under high pressure and the gases spraying from the injector seals are extremely flammable.
Step 2-If a leak is present, shut the car off immediately. Remove the fuel pump fuse, wrap the leaking injector with a shop towel to absorb the gasoline, and start the car. Allow the car to run until it shuts off. This step relieves the fuel pressure in the fuel rail and the rail can be safely removed.
Step 3-Disconnect the injector wiring harness and remove the fuel rail bolts that hold the rail in place. Remove any associated fuel lines or retaining clips that prevent the rail from being lifted to remove the fuel injectors from the engine. Once loose, lift the rail and remove each injector. They are held in place by tight-fitting O-rings that pull out easily. There is no need to keep them in order.
Step 4-Remove the upper and lower O-ring seals on the injector. Place the injector in a carburetor soaking basket and place the basket in a bucket of carburetor cleaner. Allow the injector to soak for several hours to thoroughly clean out the carbon deposits. After soaking, rinse the injector with clean water and immediately blow dry with compressed air.
