For 1957 John Deere introduced a new industrial tractor. Designated the “420” I and dubbed the “Special Utility”, it had a rugged new front axle, a longer wheelbase, and a wider range of wheel treads than the “Utility” model that preceded it. However, the price was higher than that of the “420” U, and most buyers opted for the less expensive tractor. Consequently, only 255 of the 420I tractors were built, about half og them in regular agricultural green and yellow and the rest in the industrial yellow.
