Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant) 1742-1807
Born in Ohio during a tumultuous era that defined North America, Thayendanegea's life was greatly influenced by an alliance with the British. This alliance, formed during the French and Indian War, was a strategic move to protect the interests of his people. Thayendanegea was given the Christian name of Joseph Brant and received an English education.
Brant's first battle with the British was fought in his teenage years, but he was more than just a young warrior. Brant was a visionary who understood that change was inevitable for Native people. He united various nations to protect their interests, demonstrating his foresight and leadership.
As war chief of the Six Nations and a British military captain, Brant was respected by both sides. When the American War of Independence ended (1783), he acted as a statesman and negotiated land for the Six Nations people. This negotiation, known as the Haldimand Proclamation, secured a large tract of land along the Grand River for the Six Nations people.
They settled in the Grand River Valley (Ontario), where Brant played a key role in their economic, political and religious lives, bringing a school and a saw and grist mill to the community. Yet, despite this seemingly British way of life, Brant's vision of Native sovereignty persisted.

Interesting Trivia: although he sided with the British, his statesmanship didn't go unnoticed by then-President George Washington. 1792 President Washington invited Brant to meet with the president and key government officials to enhance relations between the United States and the Iroquois Confederacy. Overcoming Brant's initial hesitance, Washington observed that with great difficulty, he had 'brought the celebrated Captn Joseph Brandt to this City, with the view to impress him also with the equitable intentions of this government toward all the nations of his colour.' Interestingly, the relevant issues regarding First Nations that were of concern then on both sides of the border, such as land rights, sovereignty and, to a degree, human rights, still have yet to be fully resolved.)
Thayendanegea was a man of many talents, equally comfortable with a tea cup or a tomahawk. He embraced a new culture without forsaking his Native roots. Through his words and deeds, Brant left an indelible mark on Native Canada. This truth resonates throughout southwestern Ontario and in the town that proudly bears his name.
