Letzte Inkunabel-Ausgabe des erstmals 1484 gedruckten Kompendiums des genuesischen Franziskaners, in der katholischen Literatur auch als als Baptistiana oder Rosella casuum bekannt (vgl. Wetzer/W. XII, 104). 

In diesem Handbuch für Beichtväter werden u.a. auch medizinische Probleme behandelt, darunter castratus, impubes, leprosus, medicus vel chirurgus, pollutio etc.

Der Franziskaner Baptista de Salis oder Trovamala aus dem 15. Jahrhundert veröffentlichte zwei Versionen seiner Summa casuum conscientiae, die 1483 fertiggestellt wurden und unter verschiedenen Titeln erschienen, als Summa baptistiniana und Summa rosella. 

Das Werk ist alphabetisch nach Themen geordnet, von Abbas bis Uxor, und enthält detaillierte Richtlinien zu vielen Themen, darunter Absolution, Ehebruch, Scheidung, Beichte, Exkommunion, Ketzer, die kanonischen Stunden, Ablässe, Novizen, Reliquien und Wucher. Baptistas Hauptquelle war Nicolaus de Ausmo. 

Vorgebunden beigefügt sind dem Text die Bulle des Papstes Sixtus IV. (etsi domiici grecis) gegen den Missbrauch von Ablässen durch Absolvierung von Reservatfällen ohne ausdrückliche päpstliche Genehmigung. 

Zweispaltige gotische Type mit 49 Zeilen. In Schwarz eingedruckte Lombarden. Durchweg in Rot rubriziert.

EINBAND

Meisterlicher Renaissance-Einband. Blindgeprägtes Schweinsleder über massiven Holzdeckeln. Vorderdeckel mit Besitzermonogramm „C M R“ und Datierung „1601“. Die Deckel mit rechteckig verlaufenden Streicheisenlinien. 

Außen Gelehrtenrolle, innen und Mittelfeld mit ornamentalen Stempelrollen. Zwei originale, intakte Schließen. Deckelkanten mit ausgearbeiteten Griffmulden. Gebunden auf drei echten Bünden. Dreiseitiger Buchschnitt in Rot. Rücken mit alter, handschriftlicher Titelaufschrift. Sehr guter Erhaltungszustand. Nur wenig berieben und fleckig. Buchblock und Bindung fest und stabil.

Oktavformat: 16 x 11,5 x 6 cm.

ZUSTAND

Ausgezeichneter Zustand. Äußerst sauberes und breitrandiges Exemplar, teilweise mit handschriftlichen Kommentaren des Rubrikators in roter Tinte. Nur partiell in den Rändern ganz leicht fleckig. Das Titelblatt vorn außerhalb des Textes mit aufgelegtem altem Papier und mit handschriftlichem Besitzvermerk. Keine Beschädigungen oder Verluste. 

Um 1600: Johann Georg Finsterwald, Pfarrei Münster - dessen handschriftlichen Besitzvermerk „Jo(h)an Georgii Finsterwalden Parochi in Münster“ auf dem Titelblatt. Aus einer alten süddeutschen Privatsammlung. Dort erworben bei Hartung & Karl, 1972, Auktion 1, Lot 230.

DESCRIPTION

Last incunabula edition of the compendium by the Genoese Franciscan, first printed in 1484, also known in Catholic literature as Baptistiana or Rosella casuum (cf. Wetzer/W. XII, 104). This manual for confessors also deals with medical problems, including castratus, impubes, leprosus, medicus vel chirurgus, pollutio, etc.

The 15th century Franciscan Baptista de Salis or Trovamala published two versions of his Summa casuum concientiae, completed in 1483 and published under different titles as Summa baptistiniana and Summa rosella . The work is organised alphabetically by subject, from Abbas to Uxor , and contains detailed guidelines on many topics, including absolution, adultery, divorce, confession, excommunication, heretics, the canonical hours, indulgences, novices, relics and usury. Baptista's main source was Nicolaus de Ausmo.

Attached to the text is the bull of Pope Sixtus IV (etsi domiici grecis) against the abuse of indulgences by completing reserve cases without express papal authorisation.  

Two-column Gothic type with 49 lines. Lombards printed in black. Rubricated in red throughout.

Masterly Renaissance binding. Blind-stamped pigskin over solid wooden boards. 

Front cover with owner's monogram ‘C M R’ and dated ‘1601’. The covers with rectangular lines of moulding. Outside scholar's roll, inside and centre field with ornamental stamp rolls. Two original, intact clasps. Cover edges with moulded recessed grips. Bound on three genuine bindings. Three-sided book trim in red. Spine with old, handwritten title inscription. Very good condition. Only slightly rubbed and stained. Book block and binding firm and stable.

Octavo format: 16 x 11.5 x 6 cm. 

CONDITION

Excellent condition. Extremely clean and wide-margined, partly with handwritten annotations by the rubricator in red ink. Only partially slightly stained in the margins. The title page at the front outside the text with old paper laid down and with a handwritten ownership note. No damages or loss.
