Sceletium Tortuosum, which is also known as kanna, channa or kougoed (Mesembryanthemum tortuosum), is a succulent herb commonly found in the dry western parts of South Africa. It is a traditional medicinal plant which has been used to enhance mood and promote relaxation.

More recently it has attracted wider scientific attention for its potential in the treatment of depression and anxiety, to promote well-being and to provide stress relief. Sceletium contains chemicals that are thought to work in the brain to cause sedation or sleepiness. A number of potential mechanisms for its observed clinical effects have been described. The main active constituents have been identified as mesembrine alkaloids and some of their individual properties are being investigated.
