Coir, also known as coconut fiber, is a natural fiber that comes from the husk of coconuts: 

Coir has many uses, including:

• Manufacturing: Coir is used to make brushes, doormats, flooring, insulation, ropes, and fishing nets. 
  
• Agriculture: Coir pith, the corky substance between the fibers, is used as a growing medium for crops like tomatoes, roses, and soft fruit. The horticulture industry also calls this substrate coir-peat or coco-peat. 
  
• Compost: Coir compost is made from the pith of the coconut. 
  

Coir is durable and rot-resistant because of its high lignin content. It's also naturally renewable and eco-friendly. 

To extract coir from the coconut, the coconut is steeped in hot seawater, then the fibers are removed by combing and crushing.
