Rich, warm tonal image with light aging/rubbing, mount shows light rubbing/aging, edges lightly rubbed/bumped, small red X on front views referred to on verso, penned/penciled notations on verso, previous owner’s stamp on verso

Uncommon birds-eye stereoview showing the mining town of Granite, Colorado around 1883-84.The previous owner has indicated that the building with the small red “x” is the Courthouse.It is also noted that the courthouse burned down in 1897.On the verso is the rubber stamp and penciled name of C.E. Ball.Charles E. Ball and his brothers operated several mining operations in the Granite region including the B.B. Mine and The Virginia Mine.
According to his obituary in the Jan 9, 1907, Wilkes Barre Times, photographer Wellington O. Luke (1847-1907) was active in Leadville, Colorado from the mid 1860’s into the 1890’s.Another source has him active in Meshoppen, Pennsylvania in the mid-1870’s. He appears to have opened a studio in San Francisco abut 1899 until his death in 1907.While in Leadville, Luke partnered for some time with Danforth Noble Wheeler (1847-1909) from about 1879-1881.
