On the obverse, Diocletian is shown crowned, the inscription (translated from Latin words and abbreviations) reading "Emperor Diocletian Augustus." The reverse shows the god Jupiter standing, a thunderbolt in his right hand and a scepter in his left, with an inscription reading "Jupiter the Protector of Two Emperors." (At the time, Diocletian shared rule of the Roman Empire with Maximian and Constantius I.)
