Nice Brogi view showing the statue of Saint Bartholomew who was one of the 12 apostles of Christ executed by being skinned alive.  Shown here in Marco d’Agate’s portrayal with his flayed skin draped over his shoulders!  The writing at the base of the sculpture reads, “Non me Praxiteles, sed Marcus finxit Agrates” which was placed by the artist assuring the viewer that the stature was made by him not the better known artist Praxiteles.

Giacomo Brogi (1822-1881) was first active in Rome opening his studio in 1864.  Later he had several addresses in Florence and at least one in Naples. He occupied the 16 Lung Arno della Grazie address in 1878, publishing a catalog of his works that year.   He made an extensive trip to the Holy Land in 1868 producing many fine views.  He was also the founder of the Italian Photographic Society.  His son Carlo continued the business.
