USS NARWHAL SS-167 offered is a United States Navy Submarine 

first day cover postmarked from Washington, DC on June 21, 1991. 

Blue photo of submarine on cachet #2842 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964.

Cover franked with a 50 cent Antarctic Treaty stamp # C-130 (FDOI)

This 349 foot V-5 Class submarine was built at Portsmouth NSY between

1927 and 1930 and commissioned 15 May 1930.

She was being overhauled at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard when the

enemy attacked on 7 December 1941. Her crew manned the guns and assisted

in the downing of two enemy torpedo planes. This proud submarine continued

to fight in the Pacific Theater of WW II, making 15 war patrols. See the extensive
