I know being a history buff, I sometimes ramble- instead of saying- 'hey- buy this great coin'!    I guess it's just 'luck' that a lot of the coins I reviewed today had to do with our past - particularly our past that involves men and women fighting battles in far away places, well- from here in Canada- and it always bothers  me that we never truly pay tribute to them the way we should.

This uncirculated coin represents the Armistice that ended 'the war to end all wars', so we thought.  Of course it has the poppy- during WWI, there was 650,000 men AND women  fought to protect the concept of peace and freedom that so many of us take for granted. 136,000 of these brave men and women either gave their lives or were injured. Remember Canada only had a population of around 8 million at the time. 
There are many people responsible for the 'POPPY' a symbol of remembrance in Canada, UK, US- and other Commonwealth countries around the world- one of the leaders of the movement was Canadian Medical Officer Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.   He became known world wide of the poem: In Flanders Fields- he wrote it during the Second Battle of Ypres, Belgium in May of 1915- and was first published in December of the same year.  With everything happening today- I often think of that poem - more as a prayer- 'While in the sky, the larks still bravely singing, fly unheard, amid the guns below. We are the dead, Short days ago We lived, felt dawns, saw sunsets glow; Loved and were loved- but now we lie In Flanders Fields' or is it Donetsk Oblast- when will we ever learn?


The coin is in mint shape- never touch by human hands- well- not mine and I've had it since 2008.
