Clare in the Community is a Long-running Radio 4 sitcom written by Harry Venning and David Ramsden, starring Sally Phillips as Clare Barker.

Each week we join Clare in her continued struggle to control both her personal and professional life.

In today’s Big Society there are plenty of challenges out there for an involved, caring social worker. Or even Clare.

Originally starting life as a cartoon strip in The Guardian, she’s been brought to life by multi-award winning actor Sally Philips alongside an ensemble cast.

Clare is in her thirties, white, middle-class and heterosexual, all of which are causes of discomfort to her. Although she believes herself to be the ultimate professional, she is completely incompetent. After 11 series and 67 episodes Clare has still failed to learn any people skills.

Episodes revolve around social work issues and the office politics in the Sparrowhawk Family Centre where Clare works, alongside storylines about her personal life with her hapless husband Brian (Alex Lowe), Nanny Nali (Nina Conti) and her rather neglected son Thomas.

Regular cast includes Richard Lumsden, Sarah Kendall, Andrew Wincott, Sarah Thom, Nina Wadia and Gbemisola Ikumelo and previously featured Liza Tarbuck and Ellen Thomas.

Alongside the regular series, there’s been an Edinburgh special recorded onsite at the Fringe Festival and a one-off Christmas outing featuring guest star Hugh Bonneville as a tramp claiming to be Father Christmas.

Produced by BBC Studios' Radio Comedy team.
