Africa's diverse climates and landscapes enable and hinder human progress. Fertile croplands in Nigeria and the Great Rift Valley feed millions, but elsewhere, deserts, lowlands, poor soils, and unreliable rain force people to compete for limited resources, Conflicts and poverty is on the rise, along with population. This is a study of Africa: the land and the people. One map-side titled “How the Land Unfolds” contains a satellite-derived National Geographic political map of Africa, color-coded accorded to land cover, from deserts, to forests, to densely-populated areas. The reverse map-side shows the continent of Africa, also color-coded to show the relative footprint of man, including population, roads and rails, and use and power grids.
