1968 British Op & Pop Art “Painters Prints: Painters Associated With The Croydon College of Art” Poster, Falmer House University of Sussex. Bridget Riley, Allen Jones , Richard Allen & Others.

A incredibly rare poster for the “Painters Prints” exhibition, held in the Junior Common Room in Falmer House at the University of Sussex between November 26th and December 13th 1968. The design features the hand prints of 17 artists who were associated with the Croydon College of Art (as former pupils or teachers) and who had gone on to do great things in the art world including Bridget Riley, Allen Jones, Richard Allen, Mel Boyaner, Edward Helmer, John Holland and Peter Sedgley. Lower right showing (designers?) names “Wykes/Wright”.

The poster has no year date, and coupled with the fact that the show was so small (being held in a Common Room) that virtually no information about it appears online in any of the artists’ or gallery records, I was losing hope that a definite year could be ascertained, although it had the look of the late 1960’s. As a final throw of the dice, I emailed Bridget Riley’s office and the wonderfully helpful Amanda Sim confirmed the year as 1968. Additionally, she said that it was one that she had not seen before. 

Approx. 480x765mm., old drawing pin holes to corners resulting in small loss to upper left and right, a couple of small peripheral chips and nicks and light horizontal creasing where stored rolled. Overall of very good appearance and extremely rare.
