A Pair of Chinese (?) River Scenes c.1890-1900 Signed by the Artist’s Initials

A pair of watercolour drawings, both apparently showing Chinese(?) river scenes and in a Western style, signed by the artist “G(?).Y.” at lower left of each. Affixed onto original card backing mounts but sadly there are no clues as to the location of the views or date of execution.  

The first depicts several fishing boats by water’s edge with small figures alongside, one bringing in the catch. Another boat rests by the shoreline in front of several small waterside buildings.

The second shows a river view, apparently with a number of “Diaojiaolou” three-story stilt houses by the shoreline, with wooden stilts piled up against the side of one - possibly during some construction work. A forest of fur(?) trees in the background. The Diaojiaolou stilt houses are more common in the South of China, and were originally intended to protect the owner from wild animals, insects and flooding, with the upper floor often being used as a safe haven for livestock. 

Images approx. 240x100mm., and overall size approx. 320x170mm., both with spotting (foxing) to both images, as well as other discolouration/staining including the mounts. Occasional light paper adhesions where an old picture mount has been removed at some time in the past, and indentation in one mount. Reverse with various original pencil notes giving framing instructions. An interesting pair which a little more investigation could handsomely repay.
