This collection of photographs of male models by Eric Schwabel is very compelling. His use of light and dark to create a range of moods and impressions is one of the artist’s strongest skills. In most of the photographs in this collection, the lighting is not sunlight but is the highly controlled studio lighting that Schwabel manipulates to get exactly the play of shadow and dark that he wishes for his compositions. Make no mistake; his work is very strategic, very calculated, and perfect in achieving his artistic vision. The result of high intensity studio lights is also the ability to create velvety deep darks and this is especially true for this collection where backgrounds become the darkest blacks possible, evoking the dark black backgrounds of the Dutch masters. Schwabel also reveals the studio workings and sets in his photography so we see slick minimal sets surrounded by equipment and lights. This speaks very clearly to his desire to comment upon the work of photography and not just the final product. The use of stage curtains and pedestals is a further comment upon the theater, drama, sculptural aspect of photography. Even though this collection is billed as focusing on the male form, it also speaks to the art and profession of photography, the interactions between artist and model, and careful composition
