The Genial Showman by Edward P. Hingston, Imprint Society

 

You are bidding on The Genial Showman Being the Reminiscences of the life of Artemus Ward by Edward P. Hingston, with an introduction by Walter Muir Whitehill.  The Imprint Society, Barre, MA published the book special contents copyright 1971.  The book was issued as a limited edition of 1950 copies.  The book up for auction was signed by   Walter Muir Whitehill but not number so must be considered out of series.  The interior is in fine condition.  The pages are tight and clean.  There are no tears or marks.  The cover is in very good to fine condition.   There is chipping of the black color along the edges of the title block.  The slipcase is in very good condition.  There are stains in a few spots.  The book is 7 1/8” x 10 5/8” tall and 359 pages plus a 1 page colophon.  The book is illustrated with numerous b & w wood and steal engravings dating from 1860 to 1870.  The handbills decorating the covers and slipcase are reproduced from the originals in the Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts.  The book is a great example of the quality of Alden Johnson’s The Imprint Society books.  He published in the 70s important and beautiful books of the highest quality.
