This is a unique panoramic photo of the 1955 Indianapolis 500 just before the start on the pace lap. You can see the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible pace car (driven by Thomas H. Keating) leading the pack to the green flag. The winner of this event was Bob Sweikert in his Kurtis Kraft Offy John Zink Special. Bill Vukovich dominated his fourth Indy 500 in a row, until he crashed fatally on lap 57 in a multi-car accident precipitated when Roger Ward went into the fence and flipped back onto the track.
