READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM UL WEBSITE:
The next generation of smoke alarms and smoke detectors that comply with the new Standards will be equipped with more advanced sensors or use several sensors (multi-criteria) and algorithms that will be capable of distinguishing the difference between a smoldering fire and cooking smoke. This can be accomplished based on the differences in smoke particle size, quantity, gas concentrations and color between fires and cooking aerosols. Advancements in detector sensor design and software algorithms have made this possible. While it is difficult to eliminate all nuisance alarms, it is anticipated that the next generation products will greatly reduce nuisance alarms due to cooking.
Manufacturers of smoke alarms and detectors will need to configure their products with advanced sensors and software to meet the challenges of the new fire tests. Manufacturers will have until May, 2020 to re-design and re-certify their products.
SOME IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. IN 2015, SYSTEM SENSOR AND MANY OTHER MANUFACTURERS HAVE STOPPED PRODUCTION OF ION SMOKES. THIS IS DUE TO THE STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS OF "AMERICUM 241" (GOOGLE THAT FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING). FIRE ALARM MANUFACTURERS WERE ALSO SEEING THEIR DEMAND DROP (THOUGH ION SMOKES ARE USED WIDELY IN SPECIAL HAZARD AND CLEAN ROOMS WHEREBY THEY NEED SPEEDY DETECTION IN VERY CLEAN ENVIRONMENTS.
IF YOU GOOGLE "SYSTEM SENSOR ION SMOKES DISCONTINUED" YOU WILL FIND THE ARTICLES.
2. ON OR ABOUT 5-29-2020, SMOKE DETECTORS THAT WILL NO LONGER TO BE COMPLIANT WITH THE NEW UL LISTINGS WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE TO BE PRODUCED BY THE MANUFACTURERS (AND BE UL LISTED). UL AND NFPA IS REQUIRING NEW DETECTION RELIABILITY. READ THE ARTICLE BY GOOGLING: "NEW 2020 SMOKE DETECTOR REQUIREMENTS".
3. TYPICALLY "FENWAL" ION SMOKES ARE USED PREDOMINANTLY IN SPECIAL HAZARD HIGH VALUE AREAS. SOMETIMES RELEASING SERVICES (HALON, FM-200, INTERGEN, ETC.) WHICH ARE VERY EXPENSIVE GASES. SO WHEN POSSIBLE, I ALWAYS RECOMMEND NEW WHEN AVAILABLE...DUE TO THE POTENTIAL OF A USED DETECTOR HAVING "AN ISSUE". FOR SAFETY REASON AND THE DAMAGE ($$$!) CAUSED FROM ACCIDENTAL DUMPS (RELEASING!) OF THESE SYSTEMS....SLEEEEEEP BETTER KNOWING THAT YOU BOUGHT NEW!
SO A WORD TO THE WISE, "STOCK UP" ON THE SPECIALTY DETECTORS THAT YOU NEED. THANKS!
