Original Articles by Members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR)

 National Pastime: 2004

24th annual "A Review of Baseball History"

Among the most serious baseball fans and (frequently) hobbyists are members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). Now approaching its 40th anniversary, SABR has produced reams of baseball research and many dozens of publications. Here is a great one:

National Pastime (2004, Kansas City Royals Academy cover) is a 124-page, 8-1/2" X 11" soft cover publication full of original research by members of the Society for American Baseball Research. Some of this annual's features include:

  • Kansas City Royals' Baseball Academy Richard Peurzer
  • Death on the Diamond [Cal Drummond] Larry Gerlach
  • Jose Mendez: Havana & Key West David Skinner
  • Willard Brown, A Forgotten Ballplayer Walt Wilson
  • Baseball's (Almost) Greatest Comeback Ever Lyle Spatz
  • George Grantham Bain Steve L. Steinberg
  • The Forgotten Games of Eddie Plank Dave Gulden
  • "Vintage" Vintage Baseball Bob Tholkes
  • How Baseball Began Randall Brown
  • American Song, America's Game Matthew G. Doublestein
  • From the Ivy League to the Big Leagues Jay Thomas

  • White Sox Suspended from the American League? Doug Pappas
  • Babe Ruth at Sing Siong Prison Robert Gold
  • Of Horsehides and Hexagrams Maxwell Kates

. . . and MORE Lots of good baseball reading.

This edition is in Excellent, lightly read condition. However, it has a tobacco smoke smell even after a several months' airing.

This is a great opportunity to fill in an important spot in your baseball library.

Important: Shipping Information

A goal has always been to keep shipping costs low. Our primary objective is to sell cards and other things of interest to baseball hobbyists - not make money by overcharging on shipping. If you ever believe you are being overcharged on shipping, please email us and we will double-check the facts of the matter. Thank you!

  • For U.S. customers (on most items) we combine multiple items purchased so you pay only the shipping charge on the heaviest item - all other items ship free of charge. (An exception would be if an item must be sent via media/book rate; also, on certain heavier items there may be an extra charge due to increased cost of shipping via Priority Mail instead of First Class.) In order to receive this combined item/one-fee service, PLEASE wait for or request a combined invoice. Otherwise fees accrue which we cannot eliminate.
  • We will ship worldwide: Before buying citizens of all other countries, please email us first for the exact cost.
  • We pack your order carefully - sandwiching cards between cardboard and utilizing boxes, bubble wrap, etc., as necessary - to ensure your items arrive in the condition you expect.
  • Items are shipped the next business day. We ship 5 - usually 6 - days each week.
  • Payment should be made within 7 days after initial purchase on invoice. SABR-1
