While perusing through old books in an antique mall, I came upon a small book of poetry called Valley Song And Verse by William Hutcheson. The book was printed in 1911, with illustrations by the poet's brother. I purchased the book, and decided to bring one of Hutcheson's "songs" to life by really making it a song that someone can sing. This will introduce an audience to an obscure poet and a beautiful poem as well. Hutcheson, a Scotsman, reveres the sea in words that are quite intimate and expressive. I set the poem in 6/8, as a barcarolle, as that seems to befit the sea setting so well. I "heard" it (so I wrote it) for a tenor voice, but anyone can sing the piece. The range is from treble clef F on the first space to G above the staff, only an octave and one note. The music moves from g pure minor to Bb major and back again. The harp part is suited to a small harp of 22 strings, tuned to Bb with no need for changes or added accidentals. The oboe and violin parts are rather easy as well. You will receive the music in a hard stock cover for the singer to use, and separate parts for harp, violin, and oboe. See my other pieces...you may want several. These pieces are peaceful and folk-like in nature, and would make nice entertainment pieces for a recital or banquet, wedding, church, etc. They are easy to put together and very ethereal sounding in style.
