This is a pre-publication, author-issued, softbound manuscript edition of a work later to be published in hardcover by Alfred A. Knopf in 1948.

Inscribed by James M. Cain in blue pen on first page: "Dick: For your collection, Jim Los Angeles, Calif March 19, 1948"

On title page, he adds: "Mimeographed script for checking purposes, 1 of 20. Several changes made in proof for book publication." Cain has also crossed one phrase out of the first page of text using pencil. Two volumes, 8.5 x 11" format, comprising a total of 496 double spaced, single sided pages. Tan printed stiff paper covers showing some offsetting, foxing and other marks of age. Page edges, and to a minor extent, a few pages, display some foxing. Overall, vg or better condition.

A rare pre-book publication printed manuscript inscribed by hard-boiled author James M. Cain (THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE) to a collector of his work.
