This is a thangka painting of the Tibetan Buddha Amitabha, Buddha of Infinite Light and Life. The thangka measures about 32 inches long by 25 inches wide at it's widest point. The painting itself measures about 9 1/2 inches high by 7 1/2 inches wide. It is framed in an inner layer of red brocade, then golden brocade, and then finished in midnight blue brocade with lotuses and clouds. It has a wooden dowel across the bottom. Protecting the painting and holding in the sacred energy of the deity is a red and orange yellow covering cloth as can be seen in the fifth photo. The entire painting can be rolled and has ties to keep it securely closed. Amitabha is painted seated on a lotus throne with flaming jewels beneath him and a lotus above. He is encircled in a golden cloud halo with the Himalayan mountains behind him in the distance. In Tibetan Buddhism, the Buddha is surrounded by five celestial Buddhas who represent his divine attributes. Amitabha is the most ancient among these Buddhas. He is red in color. His hands are in Dhyana Mudra, the mudra of meditation. He holds a pot containing the elixir of immortality. Amitabha reigns over the Land of Bliss, a paradise where everything is bright and totally free from darkness.
