Vintage 1961 Mario Bordi Freedom of the Plains Horse Print Framed 89cm

A striking large vintage framed print of Freedom of the Plains by Italian artist Mario Bordi (1896–1980), depicting three horses galloping across an expansive dark landscape beneath a dramatic blue-grey sky.

The composition is known from the early 1960s, with another documented example dated 1961. This example retains its original rear title label reading “Freedom of the Plains by Mario Bordi”, together with a period trade label for Matson, Swan & Morgan Limited, Picture Frame Makers, Fine Art Dealers and Printsellers, Grainger Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne.

The Matson, Swan & Morgan label also carries a handwritten notation which appears to read “12.61”, providing strong evidence that this example was framed or retailed in December 1961.

Presented behind glass in a slim cream/ivory-toned wooden frame with gilt inner detail. The restrained frame works particularly well with the atmospheric blue, green and black palette of the image.

A fantastic piece of early 1960s equestrian wall art with considerably more character than a modern reproduction, particularly with its surviving Newcastle dealer and title labels.

The frame with glass is a heavyweight solid and substantial frame weighing 4.6kg.

Condition
