For sale is a beautiful Meiji era (1868–1912) set of 2 traditional Japanese Buddhist statues depicting Fudo Myoo (Acala), the powerful guardian deity of Buddha and Buddhism in Japan. These statues feature detailed craftsmanship, showing Fudo Myoo standing in front of fierce flames, holding a sword in his right hand and a rope in his left hand.
The non-magnetic cast mix metal alloy statues were manufactured in Japan. The exact composition is unknown but it may be antimony. The statues have a wonderful aged patina, resembling classic antimony or copper/bronze-based alloys. The pieces are quite heavy. We do not know the meaning of the handwritten calligraphy on the back of the statues.
The larger Fudo Myoo statue is approx. 15cm (5 7/8") high, 7cm (2 3/4") wide and 300 grams.
The smaller Fudo Myoo statue is approx. 9cm / (3 1/2") high, 5cm (2") wide and 70 grams.
Both of the statues are in good pre-owned antique condition. As these are 100 plus years old religious statues, they show signs of time, including surface wear, minor nicks, scuffs, marks, a flaw between the feet (photo #7), thick dust, and natural metal oxidation/patina consistent with age. There are no major structural cracks. Please inspect all of the high-resolution photographs carefully to confirm the exact condition before purchasing.
