For sale is an exceptionally beautiful vintage collection of 8 traditional Japanese handmade Washi paper dolls. Each doll gracefully depicts a classic female character from Japanese history and folklore, showcasing a wonderful variety of traditional kimono fashions and ornate hairstyles. The theme of this collection is Japanese Folk Art, Edo Period Culture, Kimono Fashion and Geisha/Maiko. These are fantastic storytelling display pieces for collectors of authentic Japanese folk art and paper crafts.
This stunning 8-piece set includes:
- The striking 24.5cm (9 5/8") high centerpiece doll is wearing a black and gold kimono, a traditional flat straw hat and holding a bunch of trailing purple wisteria flowers (evoking the classic Wisteria maiden style).
- Some dolls are carrying beautiful miniature props such as an open paper umbrella, a traditional water bucket, and delicate hand fans.
- Some dolls are showcasing incredibly intricate kimono details, textured patterns (including cranes, floral motifs, and shibori-style prints), and elaborate traditional obi sashes tied on the back.
These dolls are created in the traditional style of Japanese paper craft (often referred to as Washi Ningyo or Anesama Ningyo), featuring iconic hairstyles and elegant silhouettes formed entirely by layered traditional paper. Each doll is securely mounted on its own black-lacquered wooden display base.
The dolls are in good pre-owned vintage condition.
- Some have a natural, slight lean or tilt on their bases due to the aging of the interior wire/paper structures, which is common for vintage paper crafts.
- Some exhibit gentle signs of age, including light dust accumulation, slight fading, discoloration, minor wear to the paper edges consistent with vintage display pieces, but they remain beautifully preserved.
- There are no major visible damages or broken parts affecting their artistic display value.
- Please inspect all photographs carefully to confirm the fine details and overall condition before purchasing.
