Coastal Seascape Oil Painting Sailboats Attributed John Henry Martin Signed
An atmospheric signed coastal oil painting depicting rough waves breaking against a rugged rocky shoreline, with two sailing vessels on the distant horizon beneath a muted evening sky.
The painting is signed “H. Martin” at the lower left. Its maritime subject and traditional British style have led to a possible attribution to Cornish and Devon landscape painter John Henry Martin (1836–1908), who was known for coastal and shipping scenes.
The attribution has not been independently authenticated, however, and the painting is therefore offered as attributed to John Henry Martin, rather than as a confirmed work by the artist.
Presented in a painted wooden frame with an old Gray & Sons (Carlisle) Ltd framer’s label attached to the reverse. The business operated under that company name from 1950, indicating that the work was framed or reframed during the second half of the 20th century. The precise age of the painting itself has not been established.
A characterful traditional marine painting with a wonderfully moody palette, well suited to a coastal interior, country house or antique gallery wall.

The painting has visible age-related wear, including scattered areas of paint loss, surface marks and craquelure. Several pale losses are particularly noticeable across the sky, with further wear throughout the sea and rocky foreground.
The painted wooden frame has marks, rubbing, discolouration and general wear consistent with age. The paper covering on the reverse is torn and deteriorated in places.
