SHIFNAL AND DISTRICT
album of Sixteen photographic views of the Shropshire town
of Shifnal and the neighbouring area
Published in Shifnal by W. D. Coleby
Undated but published circa 1900 this is a scarce early album
of photographic views of the Shropshire town of Shifnal and the neighbouring
area including Ryton, Evelith Manor, Ruckley Grange, Hatton Grange, Decker Hill
House , The album measures 9.25 inches by 6.75 inches approx. and contains
sixteen full page views.
The book features the inscription of its original owner
Alys A. Steele, Denmark Terrace, Shifnal.
Alys
A. Steele features a classic
Edwardian-era variant spelling of "Alice". Genealogically, the Steele
family was an established presence in the Shifnal District at the turn of the
20th century. Alys likely acquired this local photographic album directly
from W.D. Coleby's local stationer shop as a souvenir or coffee-table keepsake
shortly after its publication.
