Virginia Dare, was honored in 1942 with the naming of a 441' Liberty Ship the SS Virginia Dare. This vessel was built by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Corp. in Wilmington, NC. The proud new ship transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces during WW II. The vessel was part of the Sept 1942 Arctic Convoy PQ 18 that was attacked by German aircraft on the way to Murmansk, in the Soviet Union. The "green" armed guard crew was credited with shooting down seven of the enemy planes! They were awarded a Gallant Ship Citation! Later, while operating in the Med in 1944, the ship struck a mine and had to be beached near Bizerte, Tunisia. Seven days later she broke in half. In 1948 she was scrapped by an Italian salvage company.  

Virginia Dare was born August 18, 1587 in the Roanoke Colony in NC. Her grandfather returned to England for supplies, and when he returned three years later the colonists were gone. The lost colony of Roanoke was only history, but Virginia Dare was remembered in books, songs, films, products and TV shows. The 5 cent US stamp was issued in 1937.
