A large original painting by Ian Locke, depicting The Packet House beside the Bridgewater Canal at Worsley, Greater Manchester.
Painted in 1964, the scene shows the distinctive black-and-white timber-framed Packet House with its adjoining red-brick buildings, canal-side steps and a small cabin boat moored on the water. Reflections and broken highlights across the canal give the painting an atmospheric quality.
The Packet House is an important part of Worsley’s canal heritage. Passengers purchased tickets there before boarding boats travelling along the Bridgewater Canal to Manchester.
Signed and dated “Ian Locke 4/8/64” at the lower-right corner, meaning 4 August 1964.
Presented in a simple vintage wooden frame with hanging cord fitted to the reverse. The artist has not been identified beyond the name shown on the painting.
