Antique Victorian Miniature Book of Common Prayer with Brass Mounted Ivorine Cover. Late Victorian, circa 1870–1880.

A lovely Victorian miniature edition of The Book of Common Prayer, housed in its original brass-mounted protective cover with embossed Gothic cross and working clasp.

Printed by G. E. Eyre & W. Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, for John F. Dunn's Bible Warehouse, 47 Ludgate Hill, London.

This attractive pocket-sized edition measures approximately 10 cm x 6 cm x 1.5 cm (Diamond 48mo format) and retains its original gilt page edges.

The cream coloured cover panels appear to be ivorine/celluloid, a popular Victorian material. While not scientifically tested, they display the appearance and age-related characteristics typical of early ivorine.

The brass clasp remains present and closes securely, holding the book firmly shut. The clasp shows a slight age-related warp but remains fully functional.

Condition:

Good antique condition for its age.

The book displays expected signs of age including some foxing and handling wear. The brass has developed a pleasing aged patina. The ivorine/celluloid panels show age-related crazing and surface marks consistent with Victorian examples.

The title page has edge wear and there appears to have been an early blank page removed at the front (common in devotional books where ownership pages were often removed). The text itself appears complete.

The clasp closes securely and the hinges remain sound.
