This striking antique vesta is in the shape of a coiled snake or serpent (pardon the pun!). Made of brass, this type of match safe or box is often referred to as a Vesta. It features a detailed design of a coiled snake with textured scales, a hinged lid opens to store matches and keep them dry with a strike plate on the bottom edge. Round loop for hanging from a watch chain or chatelaine.

A “Vesta” is named after the Roman goddess of fire and the hearth but the origins of the name for a match safe are not that old. The term was coined by William Newton in 1832 when he patented the "wax vesta" match. Because early friction matches were incredibly sensitive, easily crushed, and susceptible to moisture, they required sturdy cases to prevent accidental combustion in people's pockets. These cases became known as "vestas" or "vesta boxes," keeping the goddess's symbolic fire safely contained.

The vesta measures approximately 1.25 inches long by 1.75 inches tall by .5 inches deep (not including serpent head). It weighs approximately 17.8 grams. Unmarked. Minor wear appropriate for age. Hinge and clasp in good working condition. Lovely patina from a brass with a high copper content.
