One of the most influential art criticism books ever written, this is Volume IV of John Ruskin's Modern Painters, subtitled "Mountain Beauty," published by Belford, Clarke & Company of Chicago and New York. Belford Clarke was a legendary 1880s Chicago publisher known for bringing Ruskin's work to mass American audiences at affordable prices through department store bookstalls. The book is a handsome half-leather binding with a red spine embossed with gilt lettering, "Ruskin's Works" and "Modern Painters 4," gold decorative flourishes, and marbled paper boards and page edges. Illustrated throughout with woodcut diagrams. No publication date stated, but Belford Clarke operated 1879 to 1892, placing this firmly in the 1880s.

And yes, there is a circular "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" sticker on the back board. This book was found in the Amy Sherman Paladino production offices which were giving away old props from the show when the TV show wrapped. A gorgeous shelf piece for any lover of Victorian art history, Pre-Raphaelite culture, or the golden age of American publishing.
