A halftone reproduction of a pen-and-ink drawing by Clarence Rowe (1878-1930), a Philadelphia-trained illustrator active during the Golden Age of American magazine and book illustration. The caption in italic type at the bottom reads "From a drawing by Clarence Rowe," and the plate signature "Clarence Rowe" appears in the lower right. Penciled date 1905 and the number 51 in the corner suggest this was cataloged from a collection or publication. The sheet measures approximately 5.5 by 7.5 inches on cream stock.

The drawing depicts a young Edwardian woman in a light summer dress, seated in a Windsor-style chair in a garden or conservatory, a tea service visible on a sideboard behind her. Rowe's loose, energetic crosshatching style is fully on display here. This type of illustration appeared regularly in Harper's, Scribner's, McClure's, and similar publications of the Edwardian period. Rowe was also known for frontier and equestrian subjects, but his figural work in the pen-and-ink mode shown here is equally accomplished. Frames well and appeals to collectors of Golden Age illustration, Edwardian ephemera, and period women's figural art.
