Billingsgate Market is one of London's oldest and most famous markets, with a history stretching back nearly 1,000 years.

11th century: Fish was being sold at Billingsgate on the north bank of the River Thames, probably from around the time of the Norman Conquest.

1327: Billingsgate was officially recognised as a fish market by the City of London.

1699: An Act of Parliament made it London's principal fish market.

19th century: As London's population grew, the market became overcrowded. A new purpose-built market, designed by City Architect Sir Horace Jones (who also designed Smithfield Market and Tower Bridge), opened in 1877.

Fresh fish arrived by sailing ships, steamers and later by rail from ports all around Britain and Europe. At its peak, thousands of porters worked at the market carrying baskets of fish on their heads.

1982: The market moved from its historic riverside site near Lower Thames Street to its current location at Canary Wharf (Poplar), where larger lorries and modern facilities could handle the growing trade.

The original Victorian Billingsgate Market building still stands beside the Thames near the Tower of London and is now used as an events and exhibition venue. It is a Grade II listed building and remains one of London's finest Victorian market buildings.

The name "Billingsgate" is thought to come from "Bilyng's Gate", referring to an ancient riverside landing place or gate used by a man called Bilyng, although the exact origin is uncertain.

Today, Billingsgate remains the UK's largest inland fish market, supplying restaurants, fishmongers and the public with seafood from Britain and around the world.
