This Extremely Rare, "One-of-a-Kind" c1959-60 Drake Goldeneye Duck Decoy was made by the Great Larry Hayden (1916-1998) of Detroit and then Farmington Hills, Michigan, which is a western suburb of the city of Detroit.
Lawrence “Larry” Edward Hayden was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 21, 1934, to parents Harry Hayden who was 25, and his mother Helen Hayden who was 29. Larry Hayden was one of four boys. Upon graduation from St. Theresa High School in Detroit in 1952, he served a four-year apprenticeship in a Detroit commercial art studio. Following that he received more intense art training under the guidance of Gordon McGowan. He served in the United States military from 1957 through 1959, working as an illustrator for a U.S. Army newspaper in South Korea. Upon discharge from the service, Larry Hayden returned to Detroit where he continued his career as a Professional Illustrator. In 1979, he decided to concentrate his artistic interests and his career on wildlife subjects.
Larry married his wife Marg in 1959, shortly after being discharged from the military and they went on to have four sons. Later in life, Larry and his wife resided in the western Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills, Michigan. Larry Hayden became a duck hunter on Saginaw Bay, which was a short hour and 15 minute drive to the north up U.S. Route 23 from his home. His first duck hunting was done on the shoreline flats, just north of the mouth of the Au Gres River. He and his friend Jerry Miller actively hunted there during the 1960 thru 1963 period. Larry Hayden stated that they had very good hunting with little competition from other hunters. On one occasion, he and his partner used a movie camera to validate their successes. The area that they hunted on Saginaw Bay no longer exists, because it was eliminated as part of the Federal development program to build public marinas and other boat docking facilities around the Great Lakes. Later, along with a friend and fellow carver Len Carnaghi, he sometimes visited the Wigwam Club on Saginaw Bay between Au Gres and Standish. He also was a sneak boat duck hunting partner of the famous carver and sneak boat hunter Nick Purdo on Lake St. Clair.
Larry Hayden was a very unique and special carver of decoys. According to Larry, he stated that he only carved approximately 40 working decoys and about 25 decorative decoys. All of his decoys are considered outstanding works of art. Larry Hayden also said that he only did about thirty paintings of waterfowl. His accomplishments with his very limited numbers of duck-related works of art is truly astounding; a sheer case of quality over quantity.
Larry Hayden's artistic talents, training and great attention to detail produced some very special working decoys, just like this Drake Goldeneye up for auction. This Drake Goldeneye is very unique in that it is fully-rigged and the decoy, weighted keel and quality yellow glass eyes are all in perfect condition and everything is tight like new. Larry also once said that he made his first decoy, a mallard drake, in 1960, and used it as one of the decoys in his very first duck hunting experience on Saginaw Bay. He continued to add his own hand-made decoys to his own hunting rig over the following years. Later at some point, after seeing a canvasback drake decoy made by noted Michigan carver Tom Schroeder, Larry was so encouraged he created a very special working decoys. When Hayden actually began to make decoys he asked Jim Foote, another well-known Michigan carver and artist, for carving tips and other advice. Larry’s decoys are mostly highly detailed and carved in differing poses. They are in complete contrast to the plain utilitarian decoys used in many of the rigs of Saginaw Bay and by hunters of other areas during his time. Larry tells of duck hunting one day when he noticed several hunters who were unaware of his presence sneaking up on several of his pintail decoys and apparently getting ready to shoot them on the water. They were so life-like looking that the hunters thought they were live ducks! Fortunately Larry stood up and waved them off before they did any damage.
Larry Hayden entered most of his decorative decoys in top carving competitions around the United States and Canada. His success in these shows was amazing. Larry once told of the excitement he felt in going to his first show in 1971, which happened to be the Decoy World Championship Show in Salisbury, Maryland. The late Len Carnaghi, who did not know Larry at that time, told of receiving an excited call from his duck hunting and carving friend Nick Purdo. Purdo was calling him to tell him about “this unknown carver” (Hayden) who happened to be riding with him to the Salisbury show. Purdo said, “You’ve got to come over and see Hayden’s work. You won't believe it.” That was Carnaghi's introduction to Hayden and they ultimately became friends along with Nick Purdo.
Larry Hayden took four decorative decoys with him to the 1971 World Championship Show. Each of Larry's 4 decoys took the blue first place ribbon in their class and his pintail drake was named Best Marsh Decoy, and Best of Show. In subsequent years, Larry entered 13 more shows and won Best of Show honors in every single show! These shows included the United States National Show (New York), the Canadian National Show (Toronto), the Midwest Decoy Contest (Michigan), the International Decoy Contest (Iowa) and the World Championship Show (Maryland). He is a five-time Best of Show — Floating Decorative winner at the World Championships, Larry established a new standard for texture and fineness of detail at these shows at a higher level than had ever been seen before.
Larry Hayden's decoys, both working and decorative, show off his special artistic abilities coupled with his thorough research, great attention to detail, and a dedication and willingness to spend long hours on their creation. A great many exhibit a real-life look that is special.
Larry Hayden used basswood, tupelo, cedar and some pine and balsa in making decoys. His early decoratives have basswood bodies and heads. Because both his working decoys and his decorative decoys must float in a natural-looking manner and they were mostly made with hollow bodies, unlike this Heavy-Duty Drake Goldeneye up for auction. (Note: Part of the competition judging of decorative decoys is how correctly they float). For that reason Hayden always did the finish detail work after testing how the decoys would ride the water. After this test, and on his finest decorative decoys, he used small grinders, burning pens, an array of chisels, etc. to complete the carving work. After applying a sealer he painted his decoys. He switched from oil-base paint to acrylics when they became available. His fellow carvers were astounded by the depth of color and the life-like look of his painting was often inspired by the book: Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America by Francis Kortright (illustrations by T. M. Short). He also obtained examples of the living species and studied them carefully before reproducing them in wood or in his paintings.
This Drake Goldeneye up for auction is one of the heaviest-duty decoys I have seen from any carver or region. This very early Goldeneye was made to take an extraordinary beating in a boat or accidentally being dropped, and still coming out perfectly intact. It may be one of the most finely constructed decoys you'll have seen in a long time, as when you look at it you'll be amazed at this master wood maker's intricately constructed keel that even has a brass-pin holding in the inletted lead ballast. This sturdy bird was carved with utility in mind with its bold and thick features, smooth lines and deeply gouged in wings and tail. The mandible were cut in with a small grinder that he often used, and the scattered dents in the wood look to be original to the wood to give it a rustic appeal. Maybe the finest aspect of this truly "one-of-a-kind" decoy is the stunning patina, that is the outstanding craquelure and crazy to a very thin coat of varnish that he applied only to the top to protect it. The tucked Drake Goldeneye's head was so expertly attached to the decoy that the seem "it is impossible to see". Even the keel was attached with precision, and both it and the head are as tight like new with no chance either will ever even loosen. Like this Drake Goldeneye up for auction, the 40 total gunning decoys that Larry made were all exceptional decoys at drawing in ducks with great swimming performance. While this earliest decoy of his is a great swimmer and a more basic form, with every single decoy that he made, each one was much more beautiful and realistic than the fantastic duck before it. He simply got greater as he learned more and more from men like Michigan's own famous game biologist and artist, the Great Jim Foote of Gibraltar, Michigan for a time.
Duck decoys are not the only wildlife art where Larry Hayden achieved exceptional success. He won ten duck stamp painting competitions ranging from 1977 through 1996, including three Michigan stamps. The other states where his winning designs were used are: Texas, Arkansas, California, Arizona and Nevada. These stamps usually feature a painting of different species of ducks in their natural habitat. The most unusual by Hayden features a painting of an eleventh century Indian decoy constructed of feathers and reeds (the earliest United States decoy known) for the first Nevada duck stamp in 1979.
In addition to the duck stamp competitions, Larry Hayden had produced a number of limited edition prints of his original master waterfowl paintings. Included is a series of fifteen prints entitled “Portraits of Waterfowl” and a wide variety of other prints. He had also made a number of top-notch decorative shorebird and ice fishing decoys.
Larry Hayden had received special recognition for his exceptional artistic work from various institutions. He donated his prints to non-profit organizations for their use in raising funds for worthy public projects.
Larry Hayden said the thing that he has enjoyed the most about his involvement in wildlife carving and painting is the friendships that it generated with associates such as Nick Purdo and the late Jim Foote.
On June 12, 2006, Larry Hayden died after an extended illness.

Larry Hayden's decoys are very lifelike and realistic, as close to the real thing as possible, but at the same time making sure that his life-like carving was not compromised by poor swimming or "righting" issues. He always intended for every decoy to exhibit life-like swimming, floating and riding performance. Thus, much like he experimented with his different carving and painting methods and carving techniques, he studied the way other maker's decoys performed on the water and compared them to what he saw first hand while closely studying the way various species floated and swam in different water conditions as well as their movements, habits and natural instincts and behavior while doing so like sleeping, swimming, feeding, diving, preening, awareness, etc.
After Larry Hayden was finished experimenting and comparing the decoys of others and his own, he was able to not only carve a decoy that looked natural, but he also carved it and rigged it to swim and glide through and over waves like its wild kin. His typical keel has rounded ends, has a perfectly located (tuned) lead ballast weight so that the decoy sat flat on the water and located the line tie to enable the decoy to float and swim naturally and function perfect hydro-dynamically. His sculpture, painting, poses and rigging worked perfect together and the melange accomplished everything he looked to accomplish; a wooden decoy that mimicked a wild duck or goose as closely as was possible.

Larry Hayden was a visual artist who's drawings and photographs reflected his fascination with his domestic environment and its feathered inhabitants. An ongoing series of Larry Hayden's photographs that spanned nearly five years show him to be an animalier, which is a painter or sculptor, who specializes in the realistic representation of animals. The photograph below is one of many of his small flock of laying hens who share with him a picturesque 19th century Maine farm that once covered one hundred thirty acres, and whose Northern edge was the Presumpscot River. Now reduced to a bit less than one acre and surrounded by residential Portland, it is this little world that is the core subject of Larry’s work.

- In 2013 he collaborated with Scott Vile of the Ascensius Press to produce PULLUM, a book of photographs of the author’s chickens with all text written in the Latin language.
Larry Hayden's photographs; paintings; and drawings are in respected collections including the Portland Museum of Art; Bates College Art Museum; the Colby Museum of Art; The Farnsworth Museum; the Fine Art Collection of William and Hobart Smith Colleges, and the University of New England Art Gallery, as well as distinguished corporate, institutional, and private collections.

This Drake Goldeneye is 100% original and it has excellent, bright yellow high-quality grade, imported glass eyes that are carved in and mounted perfectly, and both the carving and paint is perfectly symmetrical on this Extremely Rare "One-of-40 Gunning Decoys Total that He Made". This Larger-Medium Sized, 66+ Year-Old Drake Goldeneye Duck decoy measures a very long, wide and low-center of gravity 14-1/4" long x 6" wide x 7-1/2" tall and weighs a relatively hefty 2-lb. 11-oz. Larry Hayden's decoys show his knowledge, understanding and comprehension of the anatomy and behavior of a wild duck of any species and this Drake Goldeneye decoy is no exception, as it has a very-rounded, longer, wide body with very nicely carved raised and separated wings that was nicely gouged in. It also is a perfect-sized decoy for the species as it was carved life-sized for a large, adult, healthy male of the species. This decoy that is also proportioned perfectly for a stout yet long, adult Drake Goldeneye with a very well relaxed and tucked-in head and a typical thick and stubby "Goldeneye" duck bill. This decoy may not have any of the life-like features of most of his gunning decoys, but this earliest example swims like a champ and would still be an old pro at luring in wild ducks.
This Drake Goldeneye is perfectly rounded and formed so that the thick and well-rounded bottom of the front of the rounded breast and keel could cut in, over or through the water like a real duck and keep it swimming pretty-much straight with the longer, well-rounded sides also gliding over and smoothly through the water like a live duck. It's size, weight, rounded bottom and perfectly executed rigging make this hydrodynamical perfect decoy a very realistically buoyancy and will sit perfectly nice and flat in calm or navigating rough water. This decoy up for auction appears to have been carefully gunned over, but possibly not if it was carved as a collector's piece or if it was a "special order" bird and it was handled on occasion, as there is some very negligible rubbing to the bottom edges. The head is in an very well tucked-in and slightly turned pose, as if it just checking things out one last time before it relaxes and feeds, sleeps or rests. This awesome decoy is 100% original and everything on this decoy is as tight and secure as if he made the decoy yesterday. this decoy was obviously never gunned over so it has no shot marks, chips or checks and minor cedar resin bleed from 2 knots from when the decoy dried and aged. This decoy has a beautifully filed and sanded smooth body and head surface that gives it a clean appearance. A very rare, early and fantastic decoy with Larry Hayden's great "HAYDEN" hot-brand on the bottom from one of Michigan's most revered wildlife artists and carvers. The slightly yellowed, very thin coat of varnish has mellowed and crazed so wonderfully that the patina is exceptionally exotic. This 66 year old decoy either has some scattered dents in the wood stock that appears to have been used because of this so it would have more of an antique appearance. This Rare Drake Goldeneye or Whistler solid-cedar wooden decoy weighs a very hefty 2-lb. 11-oz. and measures a long and wide 14-1/4" long x 6" wide x a very stately 7-1/2" tall, and that includes the weight and additional height had it been rigged with one of Larry Hayden's hydrodynamically perfect keel. Typical Hayden form to look just like a diving duck very early in his carving career and he made it to perform like a bird in the wild. While Larry Hayden's decoys, which were made for practical use, have a charm that draws them to many collectors’ shelves. It's fine features, wrought from the talented hands of a true wildfowl expert, are most difficult to resist. An awesome and very, very early decoy from a Michigan master carver that had a passion to not only hunt ducks but also to be a force in conservation efforts.
