Requirements for ECC/REG Support
CPU: You must use an Intel Xeon E5-1600 v3/v4 or E5-2600 v3/v4 series processor.
Capacity: When using a Xeon CPU, this board can support up to 128GB (or even 256GB with certain BIOS updates and high-density modules) of ECC Registered memory.
RAM Type: It supports DDR4 ECC Registered (RDIMM) and ECC Unbuffered (UDIMM)
If you use a Core i7 (e.g., i7-5820K, 5960X, 6800K, 6950X)
No ECC Support: Consumer Core i7 CPUs do not have the memory controller circuitry to handle ECC or Registered signals.
Will it boot? If you install ECC Registered RAM with a Core i7, the system will usually fail to POST (black screen).
ECC Unbuffered: If you use ECC Unbuffered RAM with an i7, it might boot, but the ECC functionality will be disabled, effectively running as standard non-ECC RAM.
