ABOUT THIS LISTING:

**********************************************

Capture the fleeting grace of the classical ballet with this breathtaking vintage porcelain figurine from the historic workshops of Gräfenthal, Germany.  Modeled after the iconic 18th century Rococo revival style, this piece features a prima ballerina frozen mid movement in a beautifully expressive, dynamic dance pose. Her head tilts with poetic elegance, framed by perfectly molded auburn hair, delicately arched brows and hand painted crimson lips.  The true crowning glory of this sculpture is her magnificent multi tiered tutu. Crafted using the fabled Dresden technique, real textile lace was meticulously dipped in liquid porcelain slip and draped by hand onto the figure before firing. The kiln's intense heat consumed the fabric, leaving behind a permanent, gossamer thin porcelain mesh that miraculously mirrors the texture of genuine woven tulle But remember that some of that lace is missing at the edges.  Woven into the voluminous folds of her skirt and adorning her bodice are hand-sculpted, applied porcelain florals blushing yellow roses and delicate blue forget me nots nestled among soft green foliage. She stands poised upon a pristine white pedestal base that is accented with hand painted yellow pointe slippers and an elegant rim of bright, polished gold gilding.  Dating from the post-war golden age of German porcelain export circa 1950s–1960s, the underside bears the definitive hallmarks of authentic craftsmanship. It features the classic underglaze blue five-pointed crown stamp, the fluid cursive "Gräfenthal Germany" factory signature, and the incised master mold number 1801.  An enchanting marriage of delicate texture and romantic movement, this Gräfenthal ballerina serves as a captivating statement piece for any collection of fine European ceramics.
