Rare c.1850s Antique Constantinople Istanbul Hagia Sophia Lithograph Signed Gaspare Fossati

Description:

A rare and beautifully detailed mid-19th century antique print, dating from approximately the 1850s, depicting Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) in Constantinople (Istanbul) during the Ottoman period.

This fine architectural lithograph/engraving is originally signed by Gaspare Fossati (1809–1883), the Swiss-Italian architect and artist renowned for his work in Istanbul, most notably his restoration of Hagia Sophia in the 19th century.

The view presents the magnificent Hagia Sophia mosque (formerly the Byzantine Church of Holy Wisdom) dominating the skyline, with its great dome and Ottoman minarets surrounded by traditional Constantinople houses, streets, horse-drawn carriages, and figures in period clothing. The print beautifully captures the atmosphere of Istanbul in the Ottoman era.
