2017 Gold Proof Sovereign — 200th Anniversary of the Modern Sovereign
The Royal Mint Struck to mark 200 years since the first modern sovereign of 1817, this issue revived Benedetto Pistrucci's original St George and the Dragon design enclosed within the Garter border, inscribed HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE — a reverse not seen on the sovereign since 1820. The date appears on the obverse beneath Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, the first time since 1887.
