This bowl-back, or Neapolitan-style, mandolin body came to us ages ago with a batch of NOS parts from Chicago-area manufacturers. We don’t know if it came from Regal or one of the other factories that supplied Lyon & Healy brands and we don't know what year it was made. It measures 12” long, 7 5/8” wide, and about 5 3/4” deep. 19 ribs of South American rosewood, with light-colored center strips. The rosewood “apron” around the upper edge needs lots of sanding (this would have been done in the final stages), thankfully the linen on the interior of the bowl is still tightly glued and all the ribs seem solid. Great project if you’re interested in building an instrument in the bowl-back mandolin style, but also makes a great fits-most-head-sizes party prop: “Guess where my hat come from?"
