Key factors:
1.Wattage & size: Higher wattage and smaller area = higher surface temperature (e.g., 40–50°C), with minimal air warming.
2.Installation:
Side-mounted (recommended): Heat transfers through glass/acrylic—surface hot, air warms slowly; difference often 10–20°C.
Bottom-mounted (not recommended): Risk of excessive surface heat, especially with thin substrate.
3.Substrate: Thick substrate (e.g., 10 cm coconut fiber) insulates—hot pad, cool air above. Thin or conductive substrate (e.g., tile) reduces the gap.
4.Room temperature: Cold rooms increase pad output and widen the gap; warm rooms reduce or eliminate it.
5.Thermostat use: With thermostat, pad cycles on/off—stable temps. Without it, surface can overheat (>50°C) while air lags.
Typical examples:
Hermit crab tank (side mount, 8 cm substrate, set to 27°C): Pad ≈38–42°C, air ≈26–28°C, Δ = 10–15°C.
Leopard gecko (side mount, thin substrate, basking 35°C): Pad ≈45°C, air ≈32–35°C, Δ = 10–13°C.
