Here we have a handsome George V Sterling Silver Mug. The mug is of tradtional tankard form with a spreading stepped foot, a tapering body with a rolled top rim and a C-shape handle. There are no initials or inscription of any kind making this ideal as a gift for a Christening, retirement, particular birthday or any special occasion.

The mug was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1925. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 100 years. It seems likely that this has been kept as a treasured gift or heirloom and seen very little use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mug is 7.7cm / 3ins from rim to handle, 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter and stands 7cm / 2.75ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 72.3g / 2.5oz / 2.3toz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the rim near the handle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1925 and the distinctive J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
